6 Day Diet

A 6 day diet is, as the name suggests, a diet that is designed for use over 6 days. Different 6 day diets have different details – some advocate strenuous fasting while others will operate on a system of eating one type of food on one day and another type the next day.  Whatever the specific details of the 6 day diet that you’re interested in, though, they all have in common their duration, 6 days!

Unlike some other types of diets, the 6 day diet is not a gradual program for weight loss, and it should be distinguished from other diet plans that involve long term changes in eating behavior.  The 6 day diet, or 6 day fasting diet, as it is sometimes known, seeks to bring about a quick weight loss result in just under a week, but if you’re looking for a more gradual process, then it may be that another diet would be better suited to your needs.

What do people use a 6 day diet for?

The principal purpose of a 6 day diet is quick weight loss.  If you don’t have time to embark on a slow and gradual program of losing weight, then this can be a useful option to bear in mind when considering weight loss plans.

There are lots of different situations where you might want to lose a lot of weight quickly – squeezing into a favorite dress, for example, or preparing for a beach holiday after a little bit too much overindulgence.  The 6 day diet can help in these situations, allowing you to shed excess pounds for that slimmer look that may elude you at other times.

What should you look out for?

There are many different types of 6 day diets, but what they all have in common is that they severely restrict the amount of calories that your body will be taking in over that period.  It’s for this reason that they are often referred to as 6 day fasting diets, or even 6 day miracle diets.  But, of course, there’s nothing miraculous about them; they simply work on the basis that restricting calorie intake will lead to weight loss.

Some types of 6 day diets call for you to eat different types of food on different days – for example day 1 may be entirely fruit, day 2 small portions of protein such as chicken, and so on.  Others are more general, but all keep your calorie intake down to very low levels.  As such, they’re not suitable for people with very active lifestyles – for example, if you hit the gym two or three times in an average week, you’ll need to replace that lost energy somehow, so perhaps the 6 day diet isn’t for you.

Are they effective?

If you stick to it, a good 6 day diet can be very effective at shifting extra pounds. However, there are a couple of things to bear in mind.  First, you must be honest with yourself and make sure that you’re sticking to your chosen plan.  If the 6 day diet calls for you to eat a 5 oz piece of chicken, for example, then it doesn’t matter too much if your chosen chicken breast is 6 ounces – but having a sneaky bag of chips is definitely cheating.

Another consideration to keep in mind is that a moderate amount of exercise will work wonders towards shifting that weight.  Think of this analogy.  Weight loss and exercise are like the two sides of a set of old-fashioned scales:  if you take a little calorie consumption off one side of the balances, you’ll get a little movement, but to really see a difference, try adding a little exercise into your routine as well.  It needn’t be much – indeed, with the calorie restrictions of a 6 day diet, it shouldn’t be – but even a brisk 10 minute walk every day for a week will make all the difference in helping you lose a few pounds.

Are they dangerous?

The 6 day diet is not dangerous so long as you do not suffer from any medical conditions that might put you in a high-risk group.  It certainly is not suitable for the elderly or for pregnant women.  If you are in any doubt, you are strongly recommended to consult your doctor.  It is also worth stressing that many people who consider themselves to be heavier than they would like are, in fact, a perfectly healthy size – so don’t embark on a crash diet unless you really have to!

How much weight can you lose?

There are no hard and fast rules on how much weight you could lose with a 6 day diet; it all depends on a number of factors including what you currently weigh, how active you are during that time, exactly what 6 day diet you choose, and of course how closely you manage to follow the diet!  It may be possible in some circumstances to lose up to 10 pounds – but you should not be downhearted if you don’t lose this much – and don’t be tempted to continue past the 6 days as this is not a recommended diet for the longer term.
